Oligney Family Information

Thanks to other cousins, I have learned that the name OLIGNEY used to be spelled OLIGNY while our ancestors were in France and Canada. It was changed around the time of my grandfather's generation. There are some other variations of the name found in the United States, such as OLINGY, OLENA, and OLNY among others.

The earliest OLIGNY found in our line is Jean OLIGNY who was born about 1700 in Tuelle France. His son, Jean-Baptiste I, moved to Canada sometime between his birth in about 1723 and the birth of his son, Joseph OLIGNY I in Chambly, Quebec in 1767. I'm not sure when this OLIGNY family started venturing into America, but my line, starting with Noe OLIGNY, came sometime after 1878. Noe and his family settled in WI where his grandson, my grandfather, Joseph Lyle (Lyle), was born in 1898. The story is that Lyle was a sailor and somehow ended up in Baltimore MD, where he met and married my Grandmother Helen FUKA. They had five children Ruth, Edward, James, Helen and Lyle Anthony. Most of the children stayed in MD with the exception of my father, James, and his brother, Edward. They both lived most of their adult lives in Las Cruces, NM, where they are buried.

Uncle Edward served in the Army during WWII engaging in battles in Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. After WWII he was stationed in Japan where he met a Japanese woman and had a child with her. I seem to remember hearing that they were married, but I can't confirm that as she was not allowed to come back to America with Edward. I would very much like to locate my Japanese cousin. My father, James, and his brother, Lyle, were also in the service during WWII.

I recently found a Babtismal Remembrance record of my father's baptism (shown below). It shows that his Aunt and Uncle Wenceslaus and Anna FUKA KALISTA were his sponsors. I have found out from an obit in the Stevens Point Daily Journal for my grandfather, Joseph Lyle OLIGNEY, that he was in the US Navy for six years including the WWI period. (Maybe that is how he ended up in Baltimore?)

Everson Family Information

According to an obit for Elizabeth EVERSON in the 14 Mar 1918 Blair Press, Helen's parents, John and Elizabeth, set sail for America on 23 Jun 1858. They were on the ocean for eight weeks. Helen, my great grandmother, was born 19 Sep 1858 in PA. That would mean that Helen was born less than a month after her parent's arrival in America. The same obit says that they settled in Oleon, Potter County, where they lived for seven years. (I assume they mean Potter County PA). In 1865 they moved to Tappen Colee, Trempealeau County WI. Helen EVERSON met and married Albert OLIGNY in WI.

Helen's parents, John and Elizabeth, moved with their son, Julius, to White Earth, ND in 1907. Elizabeth's obit states that she and John had nine children with only three living at the time of her death in 1918. It also mentions daughters, Mrs. Albert "Olegney" of Marshfield, WI, and Mrs. John McLure of Toledo, Ohio. They were both at Elizabeth's funeral as were "daughters of Julia Iverson of White Earth, North Dakota." I do not know who Julia IVERSON was, and I wonder if Mrs. John McLure is Elizabeth's daughter Bertha?
